Deciding on a hair color (or a few) is HARD AF. We get it. That's why we made sample sizes! These minis are designed for low-commitment creativity and easy travel.

  • Want to test out a hue that's new to you? Grab a semi-permanent hair color or a hair color conditioner sample and use it to perform a strand test on a small section of hair. Two ounces isn't going to be enough to color the average head of hair, but it will be plenty to do a few strand tests and work out what the color will look like on you.
  • Tip: Try strand testing on both wet and dry strands to see which level of saturation you prefer!
  • Want to create a custom color? Our samples are ideal for mixing with your regular Overtone Color Depositing Treatment Masks shade to make a color that's all your own.

How to use

  2. Leave on for 10-15 minutes
  3. Rinse thoroughly with warm or hot water

    Very cool

    My first time trying and I am in love. I will definitely will try other colors. My original color was super dark brown. I tried dusty rose, and the base color got nice rosey hint, and my greys soaked the color very nicely. I wanted to see how the lighter color would work with dark hair plus gray and it worked beautifully. A+

    Unexpected Win

    I wasn't even thinking about using this on my 88-year-old mother at first, but I'm so glad we did.

    She has very fine, thinning gray hair, and as we get older, gray hair can sometimes look a little flat or one-dimensional. After using Overtone, the difference was remarkable.

    It didn't dramatically change her color. Instead, it enhanced it. The darker tones blended through her natural gray, creating beautiful dimension and depth that made her hair look so much richer and more natural. It was one of those subtle changes where you can't quite put your finger on why it looks better, it just does.

    What impressed me most was how much healthier her hair looked. It was softer, shinier, and had noticeably more body. Her hair actually appeared fuller because the added depth gave the illusion of more volume, something that's hard to achieve with very fine hair.

    I have whitish blonde "gray" hair on top, with some salt and pepper underneath. I kept the top part the same, and colored a tiny sliver along the hairline around my face, and a good chunk of the underlayer. The white/blonde turned purple, and the underneath layers were a nice mix of the darkish red and purple. It does fade to a bluish tint, which doesn't make me crazy. I'll go with another purple shade next time, and maybe mix some brown into the parts along my hairline.
