What are overtone color conditioners

oVertone Color Conditioners are not dyes — they’re pigmented conditioners! Dyes contain chemicals formulated specifically to dry and open the hair cuticle and deposit color, and oVertone Color Conditioners contain none of those chemicals. While you can add color to your hair with them, our Color Conditioners are not formulated to be a one-time application like a dye. They are designed to gradually replace the pigments you lose every time you wash your hair, so your color is perfect every single day, whether you were in a salon four days ago, four months ago, or never!

oVertone Color Conditioners are pigmented (that's how they deposit color!), but that is where the similarity with dye stops. oVertone Color Conditioners contain no harmful chemicals — no peroxide, no ammonia, no heavy alcohols, and nothing that will dry out or damage your hair, even if you leave it on for hours every day. We are all about healing and coloring at the same time, so your hair can stay bright, healthy, and low maintenance.

Nope! oVertone Color Conditioners act like a semi-permanent, deposit-only color. They don’t bleach or lift at all — just enhance and reinvigorate.

The pigment deposited by oVertone Color Conditioners will keep your hair bright as long as you continue using them. While they aren't meant to be used in a single application, the color deposited by one use will last for approximately the same number of washes as a semi-permanent dye would.

Technically, oVertone Color Conditioners are all semi-permanent. They deposit semi-permanent color onto your hair, which will fade if you stop using them, but the color likely will not wash out 100% with shampoo alone. How fast the color fades depends on many factors, including the color you used, how long you used it for, the health of your hair, the color of hair you started with, what shampoo you use, and how often you heat treat it. For example, if you consistently use Extreme Silver on your blonde hair for months and then decide to stop using it, the color will slowly fade with each wash but will likely not come out completely with shampoo alone. On the other hand, if you put Rose Gold on your highlighted hair once, that small amount of light color may completely wash out over the course of a few shampoos. We have plenty of tips and tricks for fading color here: http://blog.overtone.co/how-to-safely-fade-your-hair/

Good question. Color and color intensity are intrinsically linked. We provide different intensity levels to choose from so you have complete control over your look. Our Pastel line contains 20% of our color formula and is meant for those who like to maintain a hint of subtle color. Our Vibrant line contains 60% of our color formula and is meant for those who have a bold, bright look. Our Extreme line contains 100% of our color formula and is meant for those who want electric, head-turning color without the risk of fading.

oVertone Color Conditioners have a massive leg up on your regular conditioner. At the risk of sounding a little biased, our products are specifically created to be the absolute best thing for your fantasy color (and often pre-lightened or pre-bleached) hair. Here's why:

  1. oVertone Color Conditioners deposit color regularly and evenly throughout your hair to keep strands looking bright and beautiful all the time. Your color will look just as vibrant six weeks later as it did the day it was dyed with regular use.
  2. Using oVertone Color Conditioners means you won't need to dye your hair nearly as often, or at all, which means less damage.
  3. Because you're replenishing pigment each time you condition with oVertone Color Conditioners, you can do it more often, which is extra-moisturizing and healthy for your hair.
  4. More regular moisturizing means you can safely use heat tools with WAY less damage.
  5. Finally (we saved the best for last), you can wash and rinse your hair with HOT WATER. That's right. Hot water. No more cold rinses for you!

This is our favorite question! oVertone Color Conditioners were created as a bigger and better answer to color fading, with a massive advantage over a mix of deposit-only dye and standard white conditioner.

  1. First and foremost, all hair dyes contain a heavy amount of drying,hair-damaging ingredients in them — this is how they open the cuticle of your hair to deposit as much color as possible. It's a great process for dyeing, but regular use of these dyes once or twice a week to maintain color can wreak serious havoc on your your hair, especially if it's already been bleached and processed in other ways. oVertone Color Conditioners are free of all drying ingredients, which means you can refresh your color as often as needed AND keep your strands healthy.
  2. oVertone Color Conditioners have the perfect pH for your hair. When mixing dye with conditioner, it changes the pH balance of the conditioner, which prevents the healthy oils and emollients in it from their job. By mixing a cocktail of dye + conditioner you might maintain your color, but the ingredients are not taking care of your hair. It’s basically like bleaching your hair and then deciding to stop using conditioner altogether.
  3. DIY color conditioner often doesn’t apply evenly, since conditioner is designed to close the cuticle and dye is designed to do just the opposite. oVertone Color Conditioners, unlike DIY mixes, are specifically formulated to give you a foolproof, even application of color every time.
  4. If you've got a bright color on your head, the Vibrant and Extreme lines provide more color per teaspoon than a half and half mix of dye and conditioner. You would have to mix HUGE amounts of dye into your conditioner to get a color as bright as our Extreme lines (ultimately making it a less cost-effective option).
  5. If you're rocking a pastel shade, you don't have to worry about patchiness that can come from off balance pH and DIY mixing. Your pale color will be the same tone every single time, no guesswork required.

All oVertone products are free of wheat. However, oVertone does contain oat extract. Due to contamination in growing and processing, oats can sometimes cause a reaction for people with Celiac and non-Celiac gluten sensitivities.

Yep! Not an animal product in sight. All of our conditioning agents, emollients, and oils are plant-based. We are certified by PETA, and have never conducted animal testing.

How to use color conditioners

Use our daily conditioner whenever you would normally condition your hair in the shower, especially after shampooing. These milder formulas will deposit just the right amount of color while moisturizing your hair and keeping it healthy. Some colors might stain your hands a little, so be sure to look for our "wear gloves" warning in the product description.

Our Deep Treatment has an extra jolt of color and extra-hydrating ingredients - it’s like a mask, but for your hair. Sub it in for your Daily Conditioner whenever your hair feels like it needs extra love. Leave it on for 10 minutes, and watch your locks come to life.

If your hair is medium blonde or darker, we seriously recommend going with the Extreme line. Try the Deep Treatment in your chosen color as your normal conditioner until you've reached your desired color. From there, use the Daily Conditioner on a regular basis and sub in the Deep Treatment as needed to add an extra pop of color and keep your strands looking fresh. oVertone is damage-free - meaning it will not lighten your hair at all. The darker your starting color is, the more color you will have to deposit for it to show up.

Unless you've got Viking-style blonde hair already, yes. Even if you're just going for an ombre color on the ends, a Pastel color won't show up on anything darker than platinum blonde. Even medium blonde is too dark to show pastel tones. If you want to add a faint amount of color to your darker hair, consider going with the Vibrant line instead. Remember - the darker your hair is, the less the color will show.

Yes, oVertone is safe for use on all human hair wigs and extensions. As with any extensions, if yours are attached to your head (as opposed to being clip-ins), be careful how you use conditioning products on and around the attachments.

Please don’t. We’ve only tested it for hair on the top of your head. We don’t know what it would do anything south of that - including eyebrows. While we know it may be tempting, resist the urge. If you happen to use it in places that are not the top of your head, reach out to your local poison control. The oVertone conditioners are, for all intents and purposes, still a line of hair coloring products. This means that the pigments we use aren't safe for use around your eyes, face, lips, or anywhere that isn't the hair on your head.

Absolutely! Please do. We love seeing what mixing our shades will do, or if you have multi-colored hair, all you need to do is section! When trying out multiple colors, we recommend staying within similar color families that are next to each other on the color wheel. For instance, pink goes well with red or purple - but mixing pink with green or teal may end in some funky brown or grey results, since they cancel each other out as opposites on the color wheel.

What is the Remedy?

The Remedy is an intense colorless hair mask formulated to add luster and nourishing hydration to dry, over-processed or chemically treated hair. Use it whenever your hair is feeling dull, dry, or just needs a little extra love. Simply apply The Remedy generously to wet hair, wait 10-15 minutes, rinse thoroughly with warm water and enjoy the silkiest, most touchable mane you’ve ever had.

After! The Remedy can be used alongside oVertone Color Conditioners for extreme moisturizing, or on its own. That said, our Color Conditioners work best when applied to clean wet or dry hair, so use The Remedy as a final step in your hair routine!

Nope and nope! The Remedy is colorless and color-safe, meaning it won’t add pigment to your hair (but it won’t take any away, either).

Yes, it’s safe. The Remedy will not interfere with perms, keratin treatments, or other chemical services.

The Remedy has similar ingredients to our pigmented Deep Treatments, but we doubled down on the most hydrating ones (like aloe, shea butter, and avocado oil) for a more intense conditioning power.
