Hair Diaries: Color as the Cornerstone of Self Identity
How we color and style our hair far exceeds what’s trending in the social sphere — it is the cornerstone of our identity, a sense of expression, reflecting who we are and how we would like to be seen. For Rainbow Chatman (they/she), coloring their hair has been a way to stake a claim in their own identity as a non-binary makeup artist and creator living in San Francisco, CA.
Join us in this chapter of Hair Diaries as Rainbow unpacks the layers of their unique hair journey and passage to self-liberation. From trendsetter inspo to the impact of their cultural heritage and ethnic roots, hair is the lens through which they explore their identity and the chosen medium to express their authentic self.
1. What does your hair mean to you?
Hair is a creative outlet for me and a form of self-expression. It’s the perfect accessory to complete an outfit. I can’t pick an aesthetic to save my life, but I pride myself on the ability to transform.
2. When did you first start changing up your hair or feeling it was part of your overall style/identity?
Hair is part of my Black culture. As a multiracial person, I’m so thankful that my mother educated herself on how to do my hair. I have fond memories of her care and patience when giving me protective styles. She was the first person to bleach my hair too!
3. Who are some of your hair/beauty icons? What do they represent that makes them so influential to you?
Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Lizzo. They’ve been trendsetters in the beauty industry and aren’t afraid to take risks. I love experimenting with wigs, hair color, and protective styles, so I love seeing that represented in mainstream media.
4. What is your day-to-day beauty routine? What are your essentials, and what makes them a staple for you?
I braid my hair every night before bed and apply a leave-in conditioner and oil. I try to sleep with a satin bonnet or a silk pillowcase to protect my hair.
5. Where do you find hair and style inspo?
I find inspiration in editorials, music videos, concerts, and fashion archives. I go to shows often, and some of the best looks I’ve seen on celebrities have been the outfits and glam they wear on tour. I read articles and use social media to keep up with and anticipate future trends during my free time.
6. How does hair impact your self-expression and life in general?
As a queer person, experimenting with hair has affirmed my journey. I really am a Rainbow! I’ve had countless hair colors and rocked everything from braids to buzzcuts. I love to look and feel like art. We love a versatile qween!
7. Is there a particular hairstyle that makes you feel your best?
My favorite hair color (on myself) is silver or some form of color blocking. I love being a baddie with a bob and appreciate low-maintenance styles. I’m a fan of any hair that allows me to roll out of bed and look ready to go. On bad hair days, my go-to is a slicked-back bun with my edges laid.
8. Anything else you’d like to share regarding your hair journey?
If you’ve wanted to try something new but have been too afraid to do it, this is your sign. I remember being scared to shave my head, but it was a liberating experience and a radical act of self-love. We only get one life, so we might as well have fun customizing our avatars.
