FAQ

oVertone is not a dye - it's a color depositing conditioner! While you can add color to your hair with oVertone, our conditioners are not formulated to be a one-time application. They are designed to gradually replace the color you lose every time you wash your hair, so your color is perfect every single day, whether you were in a salon four days ago or four months ago. If you're curious about how oVertone works, check out these before and afters!

The oVertone conditioners are pigmented (that's how they deposit color!), but that is where the similarity with dye stops. oVertone contains no harmful chemicals - no peroxide, no ammonia, no heavy alcohols, and nothing that will dry out or damage your hair, even if you leave it on for hours every day. We are all about healing and coloring at the same time, so your hair can stay bright, healthy, and (BONUS) low maintenance.

Nope! oVertone acts like a semi-permanent deposit only color. Doesn't bleach, doesn't lift. Just enhances and re-invigorates.
Use our daily conditioner every time you would normally condition your hair in the shower, especially after shampooing. These milder formulas will deposit just the right amount of color while moisturizing your hair and keeping it healthy. Some colors might stain your hands a little, so be sure to look for our "wear gloves" warning in the product description.
Go Deep is our weekly deep conditioning treatment. It's got an extra jolt of color and extra-hydrating ingredients. Sub it in for your Daily Conditioner once a week, leave it on for 10 minutes, and watch your locks go from beautiful to bombshell.
The color deposited by oVertone conditioners will keep your hair bright as bold as long as you continue using them. While they aren't meant to be used in a single application, the color deposited by one use will last for approximately the same number of washes as a semi-permanent dye would
No- technically, the oVertone colors are all semi-permanent. Our conditioners deposit semi-permanent color on your hair, which will fade if you stop using them, but the color likely will NOT wash out 100% with shampoo alone, especially depending on the color you used, how long you used it for, the health of your hair, and the color of hair you started with. For example, if you put Extreme Red on your blonde hair and then decide to stop using it, the red color will slowly fade with each wash, but will not come out completely without bleaching. On the other hand, if you put Pastel Orange on your highlighted hair to add a little warmth to the lightest pieces, that small amount of light color may completely wash out over the course of a few shampoos.
Good question. Color and color intensity are intrinsically linked. We wanted to provide you with different intensity levels to choose from so you could have complete control over your look. Our Pastel line contains 20% of our color formula and is meant for those who like to maintain a hint of color - just a bit of beautiful subtlety. Our Vibrant line contains 60% of our color formula and is meant for those who have rich, true color - bona fide lavishness. Our Extreme line contains 100% of our color formula and is for those who want their bright, electric, head-turning color without the risk of fading.
If your hair is anything darker than a medium blonde, we seriously recommend going with the Extreme line in your favorite color. The best way to add color with the oVertone conditioners is to use the Go Deep in the color you've chosen as your normal conditioner until you've reached a color that you're happy with. From there, use the Daily Conditioner on a regular basis and sub in Go Deep once a week to add an extra pop of color and keep your strands looking fresh. For more information and examples of how to dye your hair with oVertone, check out our blog examples of Extreme Purple on blonde and brown/black hair, Extreme Pink on platinum blonde hair, and Extreme Red on copper/orange hair. Keep in mind that oVertone is deposit-only. This means that it will not lighten your hair at all, and the darker your starting color is, the more color you will have to deposit for it to show up.
Unless you've got viking-style blonde hair already, yes. Even ifyou're just going for an ombre color on the ends, a Pastel color won't show up on anything darker than light blonde. Even a medium blonde is pushing it, depending on the color you're going for. If you want to add a faint amount of color to your darker hair, consider going with the Vibrant line instead. Remember - the darker your hair is, the less the color will show.
oVertone has a massive leg up on your regular conditioner. At the risk of sounding a little biased, our oVertone line of conditioners is specifically created to be the absolute best thing for your fantasy color (and often pre-lightened or pre-bleached) hair. Here's why:

1. The oVertone conditioners deposit color regularly and evenly throughout your hair to keep your strands looking bright and beautiful all the time. Your color will look just as vibrant six weeks later as it did the day it was dyed.

2. Using oVertone conditioners means that you won't need to dye your hair nearly as often, which means less damage.

3. Because you're replenishing color each time you condition with oVertone, you can do it more often, which is extra-moisturizing and healthy for your hair (and prevents you from having to make that blow out last a full week).

4. More regular moisturizing means you can safely use heat tools with WAY less damage.

5. Finally (we saved the best for last), you can wash and rinse your hair with HOT WATER.

That's right. Hot water. No more cold rinses for you!
This is our favorite question! The oVertone conditioners were created as a bigger and better answer to color fading, with a massive advantage over a mix of deposit only dye and standard white conditioner.

1. First and foremost, all hair dyes contain a heavy amount of various alcohols in them - this is how semi permanent dyes open the cuticle of your hair to deposit as much color as possible. It's a great process for dyeing, but also means that regular use of these dyes once or twice a week can seriously dry out your hair, especially if it's already been bleached and processed in other ways. The oVertone conditioners are free of these heavy alcohol contents, which means you can refresh your color AND keep your strands healthy.

2. What's more, if you're mixing those dye-based alcohols with a regularwhite conditioner, you're not only preventing the healthy oils and emollients from doing their jobs, but you can also screw with the pH balance of your mixture in a way that messes with your color and the health of your hair. All of the oVertone products are balanced to heal your hair while you stay bright and beautiful.

3. It's easier. No mixing. ;)

4. If you've got a bright color on your head, the oVertone Vibrant and Extreme lines provide more color per teaspoon than a half and half mix of dye and conditioner. You can stay SERIOUSLY bold, 24/7.

5. If you're rocking a pastel shade, you don't have to worry about the splotchiness that can come from off balance pH or so -so mixing. Your pale color will be the same tone every single time, no guess work required.

Yes, oVertone is safe for use on all human hair wigs and extensions. As with any extensions, if yours are attached to your head (as opposed to being clip-ins), be careful how you use conditioning products on and around the attachments.
Absolutely NOT. No, no, no, no, no. Never.
Yep! Not an animal product in sight. All of our conditioning agents, emollients, and oils are plant-based.
We started oVertone from a place of personal need - we wanted to keep our colored hair bright and beautiful without taking trips to the salon every two weeks. After searching for months (and dealing with a lot of faded color), we decided to formulate our own. Cut to us spending all of our freetime for months playing hair chemist, and voila! The oVertone conditioners were born!
Please don’t.We’ve only tested it for hair on the top of your head. We don’t know what it would do anything south of that - including eyebrows. While we know it may be tempting, resist the urge. If you happen to use it in places that are not the top of your head, reach out to your local poison control. The oVertone conditioners are, for all intents and purposes, still a line of semi-permanent hair coloring products. This means that the pigments we use aren't safe for use around your eyes, face, lips, or anywhere that isn't the hair on your head.
Absolutely! Please do. We love seeing what mixing our shades will do. If you have multi-colored hair, all you need to do is section! Looking for a purpley-pink? Mix our purple and pink products together however you like.
The oVertone Hair Glitter formula is an aloe-based gel with suspended brilliant glitter that will add the perfect amount of sparkle to your strands! Using clean, dry fingers (or a brush if you prefer), apply as much or as little Hair Glitter as you like to your roots, ends, braids, buns, or anything else that is not your eyes.
