Step-by-Step: Color Blocking a Bob Haircut
Are you looking to shake up your hair color this season? If you’re all about making a statement, then colorblocking might be the color fix you need.
Similar to the money piece, the Y2K-inspired face-framing trend, colorblocking features gorgeous contrasting colored highlights placed anywhere throughout your hair. This color technique is bold, beautiful, and a great low-maintenance way to experiment with fantasy colors without committing to a new shade. Think highlights with endless variations and a dramatic twist. And we are HERE for the drama.
Watch @briannemckay as she uses a mix of Rose Gold Coloring Conditioner + Vibrant Pink Daily Conditioner and Vibrant Yellow Coloring Conditioner to flawlessly colorblock her bob haircut. Talk about the “wow” factor.
Ready to create a major color impact? Here's how to get the look.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Coloring Conditioners — @briannemckay uses Rose Gold Coloring Conditioner (mixed with Vibrant Pink Daily Conditioner for a more petal pink and less of a golden metallic hue) and Vibrant Yellow Coloring Conditioner.
Mixing Brush (although you can apply with your hands)
STEP 01: CHOOSE A STARTING COLOR
When it comes to this technique, you color your hair one pigment at a time. Choosing a starting color helps to map out how you want to section off your strands and execute your colorblock look. @briannemckay decides to use Rose Gold Coloring Conditioner first.
STEP 02: SECTION OFF STRANDS
After choosing your starting color, map out how you envision your colorblock. Since she decided to start with Rose Gold, @briannemckay sections the hair she’s saving for the Vibrant Yellow Coloring Conditioner. She clips up a portion of her bangs, followed by the bottom layers of her bob.
STEP 03: ADD THE FIRST COLOR
Apply color to small sections of hair, starting at the roots and working your way to the ends.
NOTE: If you wish to have sharp edges and defined blocks of color, then being neat and organized with your color application is key. For @briannemckay, however, she chooses to apply color loosely. Her vision is to create a colorblock with solid notes of Rose Gold and Vibrant Yellow while blurring the lines and mixing both colors to create a popping peach hue.
Whichever way you decide to do your colorblock, make sure hair is completely drenched with conditioner for even coverage.
STEP 04: ADD SECOND COLOR
Apply the second color to the sectioned-off strands and repeat STEP 02.
STEP 05: SATURATE AND WAIT
Make sure hair is fully saturated with pigment. Come back in with any color you need to ensure complete coverage. Let the colors sit for 10-15 minutes.
STEP 04: RINSE, STYLE, REVEAL
Rinse, dry, and style as usual. And don't forget to do a little happy dance to show off your gorgeous sherbet hue.
“Honesty, I’m just treating this like an art project. Like a pastel-y spring, summer, fall sunset. Like a mango smoothie. Like a pastel mango smoothie. I feel good about this!”
